FAQ for visiting the world’s largest chest of drawers

Where is it located?

High Point, North Carolina. Just under 2 hours drive from Fayetteville.

How much does it cost?

It’s free.

Is there parking?

Yes, but not an official parking lot. More info below.

Is it kid friendly?

Yes.

So what’s the story?

It started in 1926 as the ‘World’s Largest Bureau’ – a less cool looking set of drawers with a mirror on top. It stayed like that for about 70 years, but as age and the elements inevitably took their toll, it was losing its appeal and due for a makeover.

It was redesigned, renamed, and built directly over the old drawers. There have been a couple of paint color changes since it was redesigned – it even went through a super ugly gray phase, but now stands as a gorgeous brown chest of drawers with gold handles.

It was designed to bring attention to High Point as the furniture capital of the world. The socks you can see hanging from the edge of the drawer, are to bring attention to the hosiery industry of the area.

How to get there and where to park

At just under 2 hours drive from Fayetteville, it makes for a great day trip idea.

It’s really easy to get there using ‘World’s Largest Chest Of Drawers’ in Google Maps. It’ll take you to the location on N Hamilton St.

The drive is an easy one and really nice out on the open roads.

There’s not an official parking lot for it so once you get close, it’s just a matter of looking for parking. There’s a small gravel lot directly across from the chest of drawers and that’s where I parked. I don’t know what it’s for, but there wasn’t a sign saying don’t park there so I sent it.

Otherwise, you can find street parking on the surrounding streets and walk over to the chest of drawers.

Some of the streets are one way so just a heads up for when you’re driving.

What to expect

I mean, expect a ginormous chest of drawers. It really is pretty huge!

The funny thing to me was the fact there is this huge chest of drawers and tourist attraction sitting in between other buildings and on the side of a regular street.

It’s something you’re going to see, take a few photos of, and move on since there’s not much else to do there.

But very cool to see. I love quirky attractions and finding different things to see on day trips, so I enjoyed the outing.

Taking photos

The chest of drawers is directly on the side of the road, so you just have to be a little careful taking your photos so you don’t accidentally step back into traffic.

Of course, it goes without saying to keep an eye on the kids around traffic.

A camera with a wide lens is going to make getting photos a little easier so you won’t have to be on the other side of the road to take them. Your phone or a GoPro are good options for quick and easy photos. I always use my GoPro with this compact selfie stick that doubles as a tripod.

Other things to do nearby

Since seeing the chest of drawers is a quick stop, you might as well make the most of the day trip by adding on some other things to do!

Naturally, if you want to do some furniture shopping, this is a great place to do it. As well as the shops in High Point, you can also keep the big theme of the day going by checking out Furniture Land South – the world’s largest furniture store in nearby Jamestown.

You can visit the High Point Museum to learn more about the area.

For kids, the nearby Armstrong Park is only a couple of minutes away and is a great place for a picnic. It has a playground area as well as grassy area for the kids to get some energy out before the drive home.

At Armstrong Park you can also do the High Point Greenway Trail which is an easy walking trail.

On the way back, I definitely recommend stopping at Black Dog Home and Cafe for a coffee. It’s a boutique cafe and home decor store in a farmhouse. I’ve been following it on Instagram for ages and it was great to finally stop by and check it out.
